Focus on PDO filament

Polydioxanone (PDO) is a white, semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer widely used in the medical field for the manufacture of surgical sutures, implantable threads and tissue support devices. Its biocompatibility and rapid resorption make it an essential material for applications requiring temporary support prior to tissue regeneration.

PDO filament characteristics :

  • Nature : Semi-crystalline thermoplastic
  • Color: White
  • Appearance: Semi-flexible
  • Diameter: 1.75 mm – 2.85 mm
  • Weight: 100 g – 200 g
  • Origin : Made in France
  • Properties: Bioresorbable, biocompatible, implantable, flexible

With a resorption time of 4 to 6 months and a glass transition temperature below room temperature, PDO is ideal for applications requiring flexibility and temporary support.

PDO medical applications

  • Absorbable surgical sutures

PDO is a preferred material for absorbable sutures used in general, cosmetic and ophthalmic surgery. Its optimal resorption time allows tissue to heal without the need for suture removal.

  • Scaffolds for tissue engineering

In regenerative medicine, PDO serves as a support for cell growth. It allows cells to progressively colonize the polymer before resorption, promoting tissue reconstruction.

  • Tensor threads in aesthetic medicine

PDO is highly prized in aesthetics for the application of absorbable tensor threads. Inserted under the skin, they provide an immediate lifting effect and stimulate collagen production for firmer, regenerated skin.

The advantages and constraints of PDO

✅ Advantages:

  • Bioresorbable: avoids the need for a second operation
  • Soft and flexible: easy to handle
  • Rapid resorption: ideal for temporary support
  • Biocompatible: well tolerated by the body
  • 3D printable: made-to-measure

❌ Constraints:

  • Short resorption time
  • Less resistant than some polymers
  • Sensitive to humidity
  • Difficult to 3D print: slow cooling and longer printing times
