Business Case #2 – Patisfrais
For several years, Patisfrais, a company specializing in the supply of products “for professionals in the food trade”, had been looking for a reliable solution to create thermoformed molds for personalized chocolate plates. The aim was twofold: to offer its chocolate-making customers top-of-the-range personalization tools, and to run chocolate workshops in their stores.
The solution had to combine precision, flexibility, heat resistance and compliance with food standards, while enabling agile, made-to-measure production.
“We had been looking for several years for a thermoformed mold to make personalized chocolate plates for our chocolate customers, to run a chocolate-themed course for the Pâtissiers boutiques.”
– Johan Claire, CEO of Patisfrais
Lattice Services has developed a mould that meets the following requirements:
- Extensive customization (shapes, lettering, logos)
- Good definition of details for a professional look
- Sufficient thermal resistance for thermoforming
- Materials compatible with food contact
- A responsive and flexible manufacturing process
The Lattice Services solution
To meet this need, Lattice Services designed and printed 3D dies used to manufacture thermoformed molds.
We selected our PETG filament for this project, a material particularly well suited to the requirements of the food sector.
Why use PETG for this application?
PETG (glycolized polyethylene terephthalate) is an ideal material for the 3D printing of components intended for food use or requiring good thermal behavior. Its main advantages for this project are
- Food compliance: some PETG grades are compatible with use in food contact, subject to regulatory validation.
- Excellent dimensional stability: necessary for optimum precision during thermoforming.
- Resistance to heat and deformation: PETG retains its mechanical properties at temperatures compatible with moldmaking.
- Ease of printing: PETG offers good inter-layer adhesion and a smooth finish, essential for aesthetically pleasing molds.
- Moderate strength and flexibility: allowing parts to be reused in a semi-industrial environment.
Lattice Services designs and manufactures bioresorbable filaments for 3D printing, in compliance with ISO 13485 standards. We support R&D teams in their choice of materials for surgery, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
