PC: 3D printing filament
Focus on the PC
In this guide, we explore PC filament in detail with general information, printing tips, a presentation of our services, and concrete examples of use.
In addition, you can find an infographic on the subject available on our social networks.
First of all, what is a Polycarbonate (PC) ?
Medical grade PC filament is made from high quality Polycarbonate, an amorphous thermoplastic renowned for its exceptional strength and resistance to high temperatures. This transparent option with blue reflections offers particular robustness, making PC ideal for 3D parts in contact with the skin. The PC filament is made from pellets that comply with ISO 10993-5 certification for skin contact. It is also autoclavable (= thermal steam sterilisation possible) and can be used in operating theatres for guided surgery.
Medical applications of PC filament
Medical grade Polycarbonate filament has crucial applications in the medical field due to its specific characteristics. These uses include, but are not limited to:
- Surgical guides and cutting guides: The high mechanical strength of PC makes it an optimal choice for the manufacture of surgical guides and cutting guides, ensuring maximum precision during surgery.
- Medical instruments: Because of its strength and resistance to high temperatures, PC is used for printing durable and reliable medical instruments.
- Guided surgeries, torque guide: PC filament is compatible with guided surgeries, offering a precise and safe solution for surgical procedures.
Key features of the TPE
- High mechanical strength
- High thermal resistance
Our 3D printing tips for the PC
For best results with medical Polycarbonate filament, follow these printing tips:
- Extrusion temperature: Set the extrusion temperature between 255°C and 275°C, according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Print platen: Use a heated platen between 120°C and 140°C.
- Print speed: Choose a moderate speed, generally between 20 mm/s and 40 mm/s.
- Cooling: Minimise cooling to maintain the high thermal resistance of the material.
- Shrinkage: Configure shrinkage settings correctly to obtain sharp prints.
What we offer at Lattice Services
At Lattice Services, we offer you high quality medical grade PC filaments, transparent with blue highlights, available in 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm spools, weighing 500g. The price is €59.90 incl. VAT (€49.92 excl. VAT) per spool.
Our Use Cases
The PC has a wide range of applications in various sectors. Here are a few examples:
- Non-return valve : A non-return valve is a device that allows fluid to flow in one direction only and prevents backflow in the opposite direction. It offers good resistance to many chemicals, making it compatible with a variety of fluids.
- Surgical cutting guides: For cutting guides used in surgery, polycarbonate is an ideal choice thanks to its mechanical strength, heat resistance (sterilisation) and ISO 10993-5-certified biocompatibility for skin contact.
It is suitable for any surgical cutting guide, such as a cutting guide for maxillofacial surgery.
